An honest word on accuracy
Non-exercise VO2 max estimates like this one carry a standard error of roughly ±5 mL/kg/min — the model explains about 56–61% of the variation in lab-measured fitness. It's a genuinely useful screening number, but it is not a laboratory test. If you own an Apple Watch, its Cardio Fitness reading is more personal because it's built from your own heart-rate response during real walks, runs, and hikes. When you enter that value above, we use it directly instead of estimating. Fitness age itself is a translation of VO2 max onto age-normative tables, so it inherits the same uncertainty — treat a two- or three-year difference as noise, and a ten-year difference as a real signal.
How to use it
- 1
Best option: if you have an Apple Watch, open Health → Browse → Heart → Cardio Fitness and type that VO2 max number into the top field. Done — the rest is optional.
- 2
No watch? Enter your age, sex, and resting heart rate. Check resting HR first thing in the morning, or read it from your Health app.
- 3
Describe your exercise — how often, how long, and how hard. Intensity matters most.
- 4
Add your waist or BMI for a sharper estimate, or skip it.
- 5
Everything recomputes live. Watch the What-if panel to see how small changes move your fitness age.
What is fitness age, and why does it matter?
Your fitness age answers a question a raw VO2 max number can't: how old is my cardiovascular system, really? If you're 45 but your aerobic fitness matches the average 35-year-old, your fitness age is 35 — a nine-year head start that research links to lower all-cause mortality. It's the single most intuitive way to turn cardiorespiratory fitness into something you can act on.
The engine underneath is VO2 max — the maximum volume of oxygen your body can use per kilogram of body weight per minute (mL/kg/min). It's the gold-standard measure of aerobic fitness, and it declines with age at roughly 1% per year after 30 unless you train to slow it down. A proper VO2 max test means a mask, a treadmill, and a lab. Most people never get one, which is exactly the gap this calculator fills.
How the estimate is calculated
When you don't enter an Apple Watch value, this tool uses the HUNT non-exercise prediction model published by Nes and colleagues in 2011 (Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise). It was built from direct treadmill VO2 max tests on more than 4,600 healthy Norwegian adults, and it predicts fitness from five everyday inputs: age, sex, resting heart rate, a physical-activity index, and waist circumference (or BMI). The sex-specific equations take the general form:
The physical-activity index combines how often you exercise, how long each session lasts, and how hard you push, weighted so that intensity counts the most — mirroring the HUNT questionnaire the model was trained on. A lower resting heart rate and a smaller waist both push the estimate up, which is why endurance-trained people score so well. The models explain 61% of the variance in measured fitness for men and 56% for women, with a standard error near 5 mL/kg/min.
How fitness age is derived
Once we have your VO2 max, we compare it against age-normative reference tables (based on the Shvartz & Reibold population norms). We walk down the table to find the age at which your VO2 max would be exactly average — that age is your fitness age. If your fitness is so high or low that the match falls outside the 20–80 range the tables cover, we clamp the result to that boundary and label it, since extrapolating beyond the data would be guessing.
Reading your percentile and rating
The percentile compares you to others of your same age and sex, and the rating band — poor, fair, good, excellent, or superior — follows the Cooper Institute style of fitness classification. A "good" 50-year-old and a "good" 25-year-old have very different absolute VO2 max values, because the bands are age-adjusted. That's the point: fitness is always relative to where you are in life.
The most actionable insight lives in the What-if panel. VO2 max is one of the most trainable numbers in your body. Dropping your resting heart rate by 5 bpm through consistent aerobic work, or adding a single higher-intensity session each week, can visibly shave years off your fitness age — the panel shows you exactly how much before you've done a single workout.
Frequently asked questions
What is fitness age?
Fitness age is the age at which your estimated VO2 max equals the population average. Higher-than-average fitness for your real age makes your fitness age younger; lower makes it older. It turns an abstract fitness number into an age you can instantly compare to your calendar age.
How is my VO2 max estimated without a lab test?
Using the peer-reviewed HUNT non-exercise model (Nes et al., 2011), built from thousands of directly measured tests. It estimates VO2 max from age, sex, resting heart rate, a physical-activity index, and waist or BMI — no treadmill needed. Expect roughly ±5 mL/kg/min of error, so treat it as a ballpark.
Where do I find Cardio Fitness (VO2 max) on Apple Watch?
Open the Health app on iPhone, tap Browse → Heart → Cardio Fitness. Apple Watch records this during outdoor walks, runs, and hikes. If you have it, enter it directly here — it beats any non-exercise estimate.
Is this fitness age calculator private?
Completely. Every calculation runs in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored, or sent anywhere. Your data never leaves your device.
How accurate is a VO2 max estimate from resting heart rate?
The HUNT model explains about 56–61% of the variance in measured VO2 max with a standard error near 5 mL/kg/min. Good for screening, not a replacement for a lab graded-exercise test. Apple Watch Cardio Fitness is more personal because it reflects your own heart-rate response to real activity.
How can I improve my fitness age?
VO2 max responds most to vigorous aerobic exercise. Adding intervals, increasing weekly volume, and lowering resting heart rate over time all raise estimated VO2 max — which lowers fitness age. Use the What-if panel to preview one extra session or a 5 bpm drop in resting heart rate.
Does fitness age work for all ages?
The reference tables cover ages 20 to 80. If your fitness is very high or very low, the matching age can fall outside that range, so we clamp to 20 or 80 and say so. Read a clamped result as "at least this fit" or "at most this fit" rather than an exact age.
