What is an Apple Health year in review?
Every December, apps like Spotify and Strava publish a slick "wrapped" recap of your year. Apple Health quietly stores far richer data than any of them — every step, every workout, every night of sleep going back years — but it gives you no way to celebrate it or share it. This free generator fills that gap. It reads the export.xml file that the Health app produces and turns a full year of numbers into a single, beautiful card you can post as an Instagram story, a TikTok, or a feed image.
How the stats are calculated
Everything is computed by streaming through your export one chunk at a time, so even multi-gigabyte files won't crash your browser tab. For the year you select, the generator adds up:
- Total steps and your single best day, summed from
HKQuantityTypeIdentifierStepCountrecords and grouped by local date. - Distance walked and run from
HKQuantityTypeIdentifierDistanceWalkingRunning, shown in both kilometres and miles. - Workouts — total count, total minutes, and your most frequent activity type, read from
Workoutelements. - Active energy burned from
HKQuantityTypeIdentifierActiveEnergyBurned. - Sleep — your average nightly duration and your longest single night, derived from "asleep" values in
HKCategoryTypeIdentifierSleepAnalysis. - Longest streak — the longest run of consecutive days where you hit at least 5,000 steps.
The fun comparisons are simple division: your total distance divided by the 42.195 km marathon distance and by the 40,075 km circumference of the Earth, and your active energy divided by roughly 285 kcal per slice of pepperoni pizza. They are meant to make big numbers feel real, not to be medically precise.
Why do so many stats need explaining?
Apple Health records the same metric from multiple sources — your iPhone, your Apple Watch, and third-party apps can all log steps for the same minute. Naive tools double-count these. This generator sums the raw records as recorded, which matches what most people see in the Health app's own yearly totals; if your numbers look inflated, run the duplicate steps checker to see how much overlap your sources create. Sleep is similarly nuanced: Apple stores separate stages (Core, Deep, REM) plus older "InBed" and "Asleep" values, so the generator counts any "asleep" state as sleep and ignores time merely spent in bed.
How to read your results
Treat the card as a celebration, not a scorecard. A big step total is satisfying, but the streak number is often the more meaningful one — consistency beats any single record-breaking day. If a stat is missing, it simply means your export had no data of that type for that year; the card omits empty rows rather than showing misleading zeros. Because the whole thing runs offline, you can generate a card for every year you've owned your iPhone and watch the trend for yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Is my Apple Health data uploaded anywhere?
No. Your export.xml is read and parsed entirely inside your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded to any server, and no data leaves your device. You can even turn off Wi-Fi after the page loads and it will still work.
How do I get my Apple Health export.xml file?
On your iPhone open the Health app, tap your profile picture in the top right, scroll down and tap Export All Health Data. This produces an export.zip. Unzip it and select the export.xml file inside.
Which year does the Wrapped card cover?
After parsing your file, the dropdown is populated with every year that has data. Pick any year and the card recalculates instantly. Partial years work too — the card only shows the stats it can compute.
How are the fun comparisons calculated?
Distance is compared to the 42.195 km marathon and the 40,075 km circumference of the Earth. Active energy is divided by 285 kcal, roughly one slice of pepperoni pizza. These are illustrative approximations, not medical figures.
Why is a stat missing from my card?
The generator only shows stats it can actually compute. If you never recorded sleep, or your export has no workouts for that year, those rows are omitted rather than shown as zero.
What image size do I get?
You can download a 1080×1920 story-format PNG for Instagram and TikTok stories, or a 1080×1080 square PNG for feed posts. On supported devices you can also share directly using the native share sheet.
